  • Oak barrel durability and resistance to environmental factors made them a valued container for not only keeping, but also transporting wine since the ancient times. Wineries keep their wine in oak barrels before bottling to this day. However, in this case, they do it for the flavours, aromas and colours the barrels can give to the wine.

Why should you age your wine in a wooden barrel?

First of all, wood is a porous substance, enabling a slow exchange of air particles inside and outside of the barrel. Oxygen stabilises the colour of the wine, softens its mouthfeel and tannins.

Another reason for keeping wine in a barrel is the aromas. Of course, the flavours that will be acquired by the wine depend on the charring of the barrel as well. Mild charring brings out sweet notes like almonds or cloves. Average charring highlights vanilla and white chocolate notes. Meanwhile, strong charring is preferred by those, who value tobacco and smoke aromas and flavours. The wood also shares various tanning compounds, which make the wine softer, richer and smoother.

Wine is usually kept at 225 l or larger oak barrels and aged for 12-48 months. Keeping wine in smaller barrels at home may require only one or just a few months, because the contact of the wood and wine is much greater than in large barrels. Have a taste of your drink and put it into bottles as soon as you think fit.

Oak barrels are like good tea leaves. You can use them several times, but each time the ageing process will take longer to acquire all of these qualities you need.

The charring of the barrel may range from mild to very strong, based on your requirements. If you’d like to order a barrel to your special needs, contact us by e-mail at info@azuolinestatine.lt or by phone +370 654 823 81.
